Stearman C3B

See a 1928 Stearman C3B at the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum. Year: 1928

Acquired by funds from Andy and Lucia von Flowtow, Sterling and Kathleen Hanel, Phil and Judy Jensen, Peter and Joanie Lafferty,Ted Millar, and Michelle Lambert.

Engine: Wright J-5 Whirlwind 220HP

Introduced in 1927, the Stearman C3 quickly earned a reputation for performance and utility. It was so excellent from the outset that it became the basis for every Stearman design that followed. The 3-seat C3B was used for mail and passenger service and it was also much used by flying schools for training transport pilots. In 1932 one C3B toured the globe and another circled it. The first airplane sold at Wichita, KS was a Stearman C3MD mail plane of which the C3B is the Sport Commercial version. The customer was Varney Airlines which, in 1934, merged with three other companies to form United Airlines.
